You know that the U.K is reputed for its education system with the top ranking universities and best faculty members in the world, but what exactly is the framework used in the U.K? Let’s take a look at this.

There are 4 levels of study in the U.K:

  1. Primary Education (5-11yrs)
  2. Secondary Education (11-16)
  3. Further Education
  4. Higher Education

Primary and Secondary education is mandatory for all students. After students complete secondary education they have the choice of extending their education by taking their BTEC’s, A-Levels etc. Students from the U.K have to complete their further education in order to join universities or colleges. International students will be most interested in the higher education system of the U.K. Higher education comprises masters, bachelors and doctoral degrees.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Study.

Bachelors degree normally takes 3 years for completion in the U.K. State colleges offer vocational courses which can be completed in 2 years. Some private colleges even offer 1 year diploma programmes which is equivalent to 1 year in college.

Postgraduate programmes are very intensive in the U.K. This usually means that they are much shorter than courses in other countries which is appealing for students. A master’s degree can typically take 12 months for completion while a PhD can take between 2 and 7 years.
